FCC Narrowbanding Deadline

The narrowbanding mandate is a result of an effort to add more channels in the VHF and UHF spectrum.  Currently the UHF and VHF frequency bands are congested and often there is not enough spectrum available for licensees to expand their existing systems or implement new systems.   This mandate requires licencees to operate more efficiently.  This will allow creation of additional channels within the same spectrum, thereby supporting more users.  This mandate will not add more spectrum, but will decrease the band width of channels in the existing spectrum., thus creating more channels to utilize for radio communications.  The deadline for this change WAS January 1, 2013.  After this date, it will be illegal to operate at 25 kHz wide band.  Most radios in operation today have the capabilities to operate at 12.5 kHz narrowband, and will just need to be reprogrammed.  Radios 10+ years old, may have to be replaced in order to meet this mandate.

As a trusted leader in two-way communications, Motorola  has been preparing for 12.5kHz technology for over a decade and offers the broadest choice of two-way radio equipment.

Consequences for ignoring the FCC Mandate.

Operation in violation of the FCC Mandate may subject licensees to admonishment, license revocation and/or fines up to $16,000 for each violation or each day of violation.

We are here to help you prepare for a smooth and cost-effective transition.  While Motorola radios purchased in the last ten years are likely narrowband capable, older equipment may need to be replaced.
